We all know by now that carrying around extra pounds is bad for our health, increasing the risk of a wide range of diseases and negatively affecting our energy levels. But losing weight gets tougher as we get older, and for women, once menopause does its number on our metabolism, dropping even one pound feels like a major accomplishment.
Although there is no magic pill for weight loss, forskolin supplements have been shown through studies to help reduce fat and prevent weight gain.
What is Forskolin?
Forskolin comes from the root of the Coleus forskohlii plant, which belongs to the mint family and is found in India, Nepal, and Thailand. An active compound, forskolin has been used in traditional Indian medicine for centuries, and it's more recently been touted as an effective supplement for weight loss. It's also known to help reduce the severity of asthma symptoms, increase bone mineral density and helps to improve lean muscle mass.
Forskolin is safe to take. It has very few side effects, most of which occur when forskolin is administered through an IV rather than taken orally.
What does the Research Says About Forskolin
Studies of forskolin show that forskolin may be effective for helping to reduce body weight by reducing the appetite and enhancing the breakdown of fat in the cells to promote better fat loss.
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 30 men found favorable changes in body composition in the forskolin group, which was given 250 mg of 10% forskolin extract twice a day.
The results of the study, which were published in the medical journal Obesity Research, showed that the forskolin group enjoyed a significantly decreased body fat percentage and lower fat mass, compared to the placebo group. The 12-week study showed a significant increase in lean body mass among those who took forskolin, and it even improved participants' bone mass. The researchers cited forskolin as a possible therapeutic agent for treating obesity.
A preliminary eight-week study of six overweight but healthy women found a significant decrease in body weight and fat content associated with forskolin, and lean body mass significantly increased compared to the baseline.
Another study of 12 women found that forskolin may help reduce fatigue and prevent further weight gain in overweight women.
While yet another study of 41 overweight or obese men and women found that forskolin reduced food consumption and improved insulin and insulin resistance, which may help reduce risk factors for metabolic syndrome in people who are overweight.
