Joint pain can make the simplest tasks feel monumental, and the older we get, the more likely we are to have painful joints. How Does Inflammation Make Your Joints Hurt?

Reducing inflammation is central to easing the pain it causes. Research shows that krill oil is a powerful anti-inflammatory that helps reduce inflammation and pain associated with several types of arthritis.


Research on Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Joint Pain

A large body of scientific research shows the beneficial effects of omega-3 fatty acids like krill oil have on your joint pain.

In studies involving more than 500 participants with rheumatoid arthritis (RA,) omega-3 fatty acids successfully reduced joint pain, although it didn't reduce joint damage. A 2012 review of scientific literature cited by the National Institutes of Health found that when people with RA were taking omega-3s, they had shorter periods of morning stiffness, reduced swelling and pain. They also took fewer NSAIDs.

Other studies support the findings that omega-3s may reduce the doses of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDS people need to take for joint pain.

C-reactive protein, or CRP, is produced by the liver and is a blood test marker for inflammation since CRP levels increase when there's inflammation in the body. A study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition tested krill oil on people with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

After seven days of treatment with 300 milligrams daily of krill oil, CRP levels were reduced by 19.3 percent, compared to an increase of 15.7 percent in the placebo group. After 14 days, CRP levels in the krill oil group were further decreased by 29.7 percent, compared to an increase of 32.1 percent in the placebo group.

The study concluded that krill oil significantly inhibits inflammation and reduces symptoms of arthritis just in seven to 14 days.


Krill Oil vs. Fish Oil

Krill oil and fish oil aren't the same thing. Like fish oil, krill oil contains omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. But research shows that krill oil may be more beneficial than fish oil for a variety of reasons:

  • According to a study published in the journal Lipids in Health and Disease, krill oil was found to provide the body with more EPA and DHA than fish oil.
  • A study of mice found that krill oil breaks down more fats by blocking fat-making enzymes. It also decreased arachidonic acid, an important marker of inflammation.
  • Krill oil's EPA and DHA are in the form of phospholipids, which improve the absorption of omega-3. Fish oil's EPA and DHA come in the form of triglycerides.
  • Krill oil is a unique source of astaxanthin, a pigment that protects EPA and DHA from oxidative damage. It's not found in fish oil.
  • Smaller capsules. A common complaint about fish oil is the huge capsules, which many have trouble swallowing. Krill oil comes in smaller capsules that also pack a more potent dose.
